The Wonders of Sound

Let me say this first: I am not a sound designer. I can find blips and chimes and stuff for collectibles and power-ups, but making music for a game is a whole new world to me. I don't even know a lot of the lingo to describe what I was doing this week. First, I had to find a software that was simple enough that someone new to music could use, but complex enough that I could make cool stuff. I found SoundTrap.

SoundTrap is a neat studio that lets you record your own tracks using a variety of instruments and effects, but also allows you to mix and match pre-made loops into cool music. I used the latter feature to make a background track for our level, and it turned out pretty neat.

Again, as I am not a sound designer, all I did first was go through the loops until I found something that sounded like something our game would have. Then I continued looking until I found another loop that melded well with the first one. I experimented with lengths, the found a few more loops that worked. Finally, I chose some of the loops to be the main, constant background. Rhythm, I guess. Then I alternated other ones, louder than the background, to make variation in the track. The final product switches between two primary loud loops, each one getting two loops, then had a third one as a kinda climax to the track before going back to the beginning. In the end, what I came up with is pretty cool.
